Without the dedicated help of our volunteers we would not be able to design and put on this wonderful race in the heart of the USA.
At the forefront of our mind throughout the event planning process is our competitor's safety, from designing race routes, to forming kit lists, to building the very best support team. To ensure competitor safety, all of our race locations are subject to a company Risk Assessment, ensuring that we leave no stone unturned and that every eventuality is looked into and negated where possible.
To request a copy of the Mountain Ultra Risk Assessment or to find out more, please contact us via on our online form or call (+44) 0845 319 6777.
All of our competitors receive race maps for each stage of the race and these are provided in your Race Brochure which you will receive at Base Camp.
All of our race maps are beautifully created by
The First & Only Self-Sufficient Multi-Stage Mountain Ultra
The Mountain Ultra offers a fierce footrace with 220km of inclines and declines as you cross the world-famous Rocky Mountains. Taking place in the picturesque town of Crested Butte which boasts old west style buildings and looming mountain peaks, the race winds up and over many wild and rugged mountain tops and rewards runners with a route through the famous towns of Marble and Aspen before finishing in the charming town of Snowmass. The unyielding mountain faces and rocky terrains of the route will provide you with an extremely challenging environment to complete the distance and with altitude levels reaching 12,500ft several times, you will also have to cope with the effects of altitude sickness as you race the 5 stages. Moreover the unpredictable weather of the Rocky Mountains means that you must tackle a variety of weather during the 220km with glorious sunshine, icy rain and even snow a possibility!
As the world’s first and only self-sufficient mountain ultra-marathon you will need to carry your entire kit with you across the mountains including a Bivy Sack, sleeping bag, food for the entire race and a minimum of 2.5 litres of water which can be refilled at various checkpoints and water stations along the way. Carrying your kit over this extremely demanding and technical course, combined with high altitude and unstable weather conditions, ensures that you are tested to your limits as you complete the toughest ultra in the Ultimate Ultra Race Series!
The Rocky Mountains are one of the most famous mountain ranges in the world and are located in the west of North America. Formed 80 - 55 million years ago through the tectonic plate shifts, the Rocky Mountains provide luxuriant views of impressive mountain peaks, pristine lakes, calming waterfalls and adventurous trails. With a selection of wildlife, the interesting nature of the Rocky Mountains enhances when considering it is the home to animals such as Moose, Coyote, Mountain Lion and the Black Bear.
The Rocky Mountains provide an extremely stunning location for the Mountain Ultra due to the majestic nature of the mountains and fascinating wildlife, all of which you will experience as a Mountain Ultra competitor running over the mountains and camping beneath the stars!

The Red Jersey Stages are something unique to Beyond The Ultimate races. They represent a race within a race, testing competitors over a relatively short distance across an extremely tough and testing section of one of our courses!
The Red Jersey Stage of the Mountain Ultra is a game of tactics. Taking place during Stage 1 - The Mountains, you must face the massive 19km climb from the starting position of Crested Butte whilst balancing energy reserves for the remaining 34km, and ensuring minimal injury and exhaustion in order to continue over the further 4 stages! With the increasing height you must also battle through the first signs of altitude if you are to be crowned King / Queen of the Mountain!
Running self-sufficiently across the Rocky Mountains is a once in a lifetime experience for most and we appreciate that it is better to be able to share these moments with your friends and family, which is why we created Support Places.
Support Places offer a fantastic package including full logistics, camp allocation with the crew, medical support if required and an adventure experience like no other! Support Places will be given responsibilities such as carrying water, manning checkpoints and offering support to all the competitors when they need it the most. Through taking up a Support Place your friends and family will be able to share your Mountain Ultra journey and experience the fantastic Rocky Mountains for themselves!
We have a limited number of Support Places available on our races and as a result places are only available to friends and family of competitors.
