Race Report and Race Results

All the runners are in and over the line on Stage One of the Highland Ultra!

Stage One of the Highland Ultra delivered everything you’d expect from a race across Knoydart – wild landscapes, leg-burning climbs, and views so good they stop you in your tracks. Aptly named after the lochs that border the peninsula, Loch Nevis (“Heaven”) and Loch Hourn (“Hell”), this opening stage took runners on a spectacular tour through one of Scotland’s most remote and beautiful areas.

The day began on the beach in Inverie, a tiny village only accessible by boat or a demanding trek. From there, runners followed Knoydart’s only road as it hugged the coastline northwest, offering early inspiration in the form of sweeping sea views and dramatic highland backdrops.

After a descent to a distant hamlet, the course veered off-road, taking runners onto a trail skimming the shoreline with striking views of the Isle of Skye and the Cuillin ridge. A large river crossing tested balance and timing, followed by a relentless 5.5km grind up a 4×4 track, before dropping back down into Inverie for a brief respite at CP1.

The second departure from Inverie launched runners into truly wild terrain. A 7km climb from sea level to the stage’s high point at 440m was rewarded with panoramic views and a flowing descent towards Barrisdale. A stunning beach and remote bothy awaited them at sea level once again, a brief reprieve before the final challenge.

The closing 9km followed a narrow coastal trail, clinging to the edge of the peninsula with dramatic drops to the water below. Eventually, the trail spat runners out at Kinloch Hourn, where today’s finish line and campsite brought rest, food, and some well-earned stories to share.

With legs tested and spirits high, runners now look ahead to Stage Two. If today is anything to go by, the Highland Ultra is just getting started.
