Only 60% of runners who lined up at the start of the 2025 Jungle Ultra managed to reach the finish line, a stark reminder of just how relentless this race is. With 250km of punishing terrain, scorching humidity, and soul-testing climbs, this year’s edition lived up to its reputation as one of the toughest ultras on the planet.
Canada’s Nick Sunderland surged into Pilcopata at 13:32 local time, sealing a brilliant overall victory in 27 hours and 15 minutes. After intense pressure from a chasing pack comprised of Harry Davidson, Nick Coats, Jared Coetzer and David Nicolas throughout the week, Nick dug deep and found another gear. Simply sensational.
South Africa’s Tarryn Gordon-Bennett added the Jungle Ultra to her growing list of achievements, following up her 2024 Ice Ultra victory with another stunning performance. Running every stage alongside Andre Erasmus, the duo finished in 34 hours and 8 minutes, crossing the line cool, calm, and utterly dominant.
- Harry Davidson recovered from mid-race illness to secure second in the men’s race with 31:27, an inspiring performance after a stage one win.
- Jared Coetzer and Nick Coats took third and fourth, respectively, separated by just four minutes after surging finishes.
- Morgane Rivière battled fiercely to take second place in the women’s race with 37:17, holding off her rivals in the final push.
- Ioana Barbu earned third place for the women in 38:06, a huge comeback after a short-course finish in the 2024 Jungle Ultra.
- Veteran runners Gary Chapman and Christine Horner showed incredible resilience, finishing in 46:26 and 49:26, respectively—Christine returning a decade after her first Jungle Ultra, and Gary becoming a Global Race Series Finisher despite a recent meniscus injury. Gary has previously completed the Desert, Ice and Mountain Ultras!
- Final full-course finishers Leino Marafono and Adrian Derungs endured nearly 17 hours on their feet on the last day, crossing the line in 49:25 and 51:23. An inspiring feat of mental and physical fortitude.
With 59 starters and only 36 finishers, each runner has a story of resilience, heartbreak, or triumph. From those turned up at the start line to those on the podium, through to those who pushed through to the final checkpoint, the 2025 Jungle Ultra was filled with courage, camaraderie, and unforgettable moments.
We wish we could write about them all but trust us when we say: they were amazing.
As the sun sets on Pilcopata we find ourselves at the conclusion of yet another Jungle Ultra. All runners have made it safely out of the rainforest and across the finish line, and now nurse tired legs with warm food and cold drinks.
The Jungle is unforgiving. It’s embrace is stiffling, sharp and unrelenting. It’s an environment we’re not meant to survive in. Yet, a special breed of Ultra Runner not only survives here. They thrive.
