Race Report and Race Results

The second stage of the Beyond the Ultimate Mountain Ultra offered both stunning scenery and formidable challenges. Known as ‘Telety Pass,’ this stage took runners through some of the most breathtaking and rugged terrain in the region.

Stage 2 began in a deeply carved glacial valley, a testament to the region’s dramatic geological history. The runners initially navigated fast-flowing rivers, which soon gave way to the first significant mountains of the race. Locals refer to these majestic peaks as celestial, and it’s easy to see why, with their imposing presence and untouched summits they dominate the horizon.

The runners faced two steep ascents, climbing from 2,500m to 3,800m over just 8km. The breathtaking views at the top were hard-earned, as they traversed the Telety Pass amidst high winds, intermittent poor visibility and adverse weather.

After conquering the pass, runners descended into the next glacial valley, where the day’s journey concluded. The riverside camp for the evening is set in the beautiful Karakol Valley, offering a serene and picturesque respite from the day’s exertions.

Alex Welch once again proved unstoppable in the Men’s race, finishing in 5:13:00 to retain his lead. Though slightly slower than his Stage 1 pace, he remained calm and consistent through tougher conditions. Simon Dicks kept the pressure on, just 9 minutes behind at 5:22:00, showing remarkable consistency and staying firmly in contention for the overall podium. Bert Gossey made a significant jump in performance today, climbing the leaderboard with a strong 6:43:00 finish and rounding out the podium, a big improvement over his Stage 1 ranking. His steady climb is one to watch heading into Stage 3.

Ioana Barbu, Stage 1’s fastest female, continued to lead with a solid 6:48:00, keeping her ahead in the cumulative rankings. Maria Russell finished in 7:08:00, just 20 minutes behind Ioana, keeping the pressure on. Natalie Chun pushed through to the finish in 7:18:00, maintaining consistency across stages and staying well within striking distance.
