An Incredible Footrace Through The Unforgiving Amazon Rainforest!
The Jungle Ultra is an extremely challenging 230km footrace from the Andes in to the heart of the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest. Beginning in Cloud Forest at a height of 10,500ft your race will begin with stunning views of the Amazon before you begin the long descent into the midst of the jungle. You will face temperatures of up to 38°C and humidity levels of 100% as you encounter the tough terrain of the jungle and face the numerous inclines and declines of the course. With over 70 river crossings to cool you down and test your adventurous side, including zip wires, rafts and simply wading through the water, the Jungle Ultra offers you the chance to explore an area so pristine and remote that few are permitted access alone to the region.
As well as the challenges presented by the Amazon Rainforest, as a self-sufficient race you will also be carrying your own hammock, sleeping bag, food and supplies for the entire race, replenishing your (minimum) 2.5 litres of water along the way at check points and base camps. With extremely tough conditions and the relentless nature of the jungle, the Jungle Ultra will test your limits as well as your sense of adventure!
The Peruvian Amazon Rainforest forms the most bio-diverse region in the world and is home to some of the world's most intriguing creatures, including watchful Black Caiman, majestic Jaguars and 13 species of playful primates. As well as popular mammals and reptiles, the Amazon is also home to many insects with an estimated 2.5 million species of insects that crawl the jungle floor and tree top canopies. Taking up to 72 million hectares of land and accounting for 60% of Peru's landscape, the Amazon Rainforest's virgin forests are also home to 300,000 indigenous people who form local tribes, living in isolation from the majority of the Peruvian population.
During the Jungle Ultra competitors are given many opportunities to appreciate the lush scenery and fascinating way of life that the Amazon offers, with the route encompassing the dense forest basins, flowing rivers and vast open grassland, you will experience all that the Amazon has to offer.
The Red Jersey Stages are something unique to Beyond The Ultimate races. They represent a race within a race, testing competitors over a relatively short distance across an extremely tough and testing section of one of our courses!
The Red Jersey Stage in the Jungle Ultra takes place during Stage 4 - The Lull and tests your quads and calfs to the maximum as you climb 1,000 metres through the thick jungle trails. Timed from the bottom of the hill, you will definitely feel as though you are in the heart of the Amazon as you battle with nature and humidity in the race to the top!
Winners of the Red Jersey Stage receive a t-shirt crowning them King / Queen of the Hill so make sure that you get training to claim your place in our Hall of Fame!
